Ways to participate with Highland Park Baha'is

How Can I Become a Member of the Highland Park (& Worldwide) Baha’i Community?

Simple! You sign a registration card which says: “I have declared my belief in Bahá’ulláh as the Messenger of God for this age.” Register your name with the administrative branch of the United States Baha’is in Evanston, then meet with the Local Spiritual Assembly to review the laws and principles.

Proselytizing is forbidden, but Baha’is actively teach and promote the Baha’i teachings. One’s own spiritual journey is considered personal and an inherent longing for seeking truth.

How can I participate if I am not religious?

You are welcome to participate in Baha’i children’s classes; jr. youth classes; neighborhood devotionals, Ruhi study classes, ZOOMs & in-person firesides, and community service projects.

Are there rituals and laws Baha’is must follow?

There are minimal rituals. There is no clergy. “Laws” include saying a daily obligatory prayer, partaking in annual fasting to prepare for the Baha’i New Year on the first day of spring (which tends to be a festive time), avoidance of alcohol or drugs (except by a doctor’s order), gambling or running for political public office—this means publicly identifying with a political party. Baha’is abstain from partisan politics, as this defeats the core concept of “unity.” Nevertheless, Baha’is have the right to vote their conscience, participate in causes, support their respective governments, and advocate for social justice.

The Baha’i teachings consider backbiting, gossip, and fault-finding of others among the worst of human expressions—as they damage the hearts and souls of everyone involved.
